Sony has revealed that God of War: Ragnarok is the fastest-selling first-party game ever in PlayStation history.

According to a tweet (below), they were sold 5.1 million copies of God of War: Ragnarok in its first week. As stated in the message, this naturally means that he has also set a record in the God of War franchise.

The figure presumably includes both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 copiesas well as physical and digital sales, but several games spread across two platforms have come and gone before him without reaching such a record.

In comparison, God of War (2018) surpassed 23 million copies sold on PlayStation 4 and PC as of November 2022. As early as October 2021 it was reported that the game had sold 19.5 million copies, but its release in PC propelled it to a new audience.

It was also Sony’s biggest release on PC to date, and it’s certainly possible that Sony could bring God of War: Ragnarok to PC and increase its sales there as well.

Sony Santa Monica has put a lot of effort into the game, and even its villains have taken great care to become well-rounded characters.

Here you can read our analysis of God of War: Ragnarok, since the criticism seems to be going in the same direction as its sales.
