Warner Bros. Promises a New Era for DC and Explains Its “Unified” Approach With James Gunn and Peter Safran

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO Dave Zaslav promises a new era for DC under the tenure of the studio’s new CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran.

The company has caused quite a stir in the industry by announcing that director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran will take over the newly created DC Studios as CEOs. The move puts future DC movies, TV series and animation under the direction of Gunn and Safran and fills the leadership void at DC.

Although Zaslav posted a quote on the day the Gunn and Safran hire was announced, he told investors today that I had spent a lot of time talking to both in recent months. “You have a powerful vision and project that will drive a more unified creative approach,” Zaslav promised investors.

Gunn will oversee the creative side of DC Studios, while Safran (a prolific producer behind movies like Aquaman and the Warren File franchise) will handle business. Gunn will continue to direct projects exclusively for DC and the deal is expected to last at least four years.

Gunn and Safran will report directly to Zaslav, though not all ongoing DC projects will be your purview. Todd Phillips’ Joker sequel won’t be dependent on Gunn and Safran, and Matt Reeves’ The Batman will be part of his own “universe” as well.

But for all other DC projects going forward, Gunn and Safran will have supervision. Henry Cavill, who is ready to return to DC as Superman, has given his opinion on working with James Gunn in this new phase of DC.
