1. FC Magdeburg scored important points in the away game against Holstein Kiel. Initially, the signs were not good.

Regardless of the negative signs, 1. FC Magdeburg landed a surprise coup and clinched their first win in 2023.

After the 3:2 (1:1) away win at Holstein Kiel, the bottom of the table initially climbed to non-relegation place 15. Daniel Elfadli (44th minute), Herbert Bockhorn (70th) and Moritz Kwarteng (86th) scored for coach’s team Christian Titz, Patrick Erras (33rd) and Jann-Fiete Arp (54th) scored the Holstein goals.

Victory despite falling behind twice was not a matter of course. After all, there was still rumbling between the team and the fan scene during the week.

However, the conflict after the 1-1 draw against Karlsruhe was settled in good time, with 1,500 FCM fans loudly present in Kiel. “We need our fans, we felt that all the time, not only when we’re successful, but it’s also important to stick together, especially in the event of failure or when things don’t go well,” explained sporting director Otmar Schork.

In addition, the weakened FCM practically set itself up. Nevertheless, the Titz team showed heart and fighting spirit and did not let the deficit deter them.

Home games are the hardest

Curious: It was the fourth away win for Magdeburg this season – and after the victories at Karlsruher SC and Hamburger SV there was a 3-2 win for the third time.

“It was really great for my team. It’s good for them to win today,” said FCM coach Titz and emphasized: “I’m glad we won today because it was the way the season went and the standings an important away win.”

The player of the game was, of all people, former Kiel player Dominik Reimann in the Magdeburger Tor. Reimann had played his first second division games in Kiel in 2019, but was no longer used in the 2020/2021 season and then switched to FCM.

Although the 25-year-old didn’t stand a chance against goals from close range on Saturday, he otherwise kept his box clean, including several times in one-on-ones against Holstein strikers who had broken through.

As Arp in the 90th + 5th Minute also failed freely at Reimann, the Magdeburg victory – the first since November 6, 2022 – was finally certain.

With 21 points now, the FCM has now achieved almost half of the 40 points that often serve as a guideline for staying up in the league.

This also makes it clear that against FC St. Pauli, still a direct competitor in the fight against relegation, the next week will have to be followed up.

But in home games of all places, when the fan support is strongest, Magdeburg has a hard time – they have only won two games.
