Hamburg – It went so well! Jean-Luc Dompé (27) at Hamburger SV! The newcomer has been the hoped-for reinforcement so far and has provided four assists in the past three games. But on Monday evening the relationship between the player and the club took a serious hit.
The Frenchman was driving his BMW M3 when he lost control of his car on Hafenstrasse in St. Pauli and crashed into a bus stop. According to the police, he then got into another car, registered to teammate and buddy William Mikelbrencis (18), and ran away.
A short time later, the two professionals were found with a friend in Dompé’s apartment. As the Abendblatt reports, the 27-year-old is said to have claimed when the officers arrived that his wife was behind the wheel.
However, witnesses who heard a loud roar of engines immediately before the accident told the police that only one man got out of the wrecked BMW.
Illegal car racing? HSV players speak for themselves
Dompé should not have stuck with this claim for long, the burden of proof on the offensive player was too overwhelming.
However, according to the Abendblatt information, the Frenchman was remorseful when he reported to the club bosses. He is said to have assured them that he had not entered any illegal car races, as word quickly spread. Rather, the wet road is said to have led to the accident.
Dompé justified the subsequent escape by saying that he was in shock. Luckily, he only sustained a minor injury to his hand in the crash.
In addition to the report, the HSV professional also spoke briefly to the media on Wednesday. He briefly and succinctly admitted that he had “not lived up to his responsibility in this situation”. “I am very sorry about that.”
The 27-year-old apologized to his team-mates, the club and the fans, who “may expect different behavior from a colleague and player from a professional team”.

Dompé himself is very disappointed with his big mistake. “I take full responsibility and stay focused on the next game.”
Whether he gets the chance on Saturday evening (8.30 p.m.) in the second division top game at 1. FC Heidenheim is more than questionable after the events.
