Leipzig – Wednesday (9 p.m. / DAZN) the long-awaited duel between RB Leipzig and Manchester City in the Champions League. The Saxons even have a good chance of reaching the quarter-finals against the English champions – at least that’s what Dietmar “Didi” Hamann (49) thinks.

“I don’t think we’ll see an English Champions League winner,” Hamann said on Sky90 on Sunday. “They played again a week after the World Cup – on Boxing Day. I think they will run out of fuel in March/April.”

And: “I think Leipzig has a huge chance against City – they didn’t win again yesterday.”

Pep Guardiola’s (52) team did not get more than 1-1 at newly promoted Nottingham Forest on Saturday and had to give up the lead in the Premier League directly to Arsenal (4-2 at Aston Villa).

In addition to winning the championship, which was actually planned, Guardiola also wants to finally lift the handle pot into the night sky in the seventh attempt. He was finally brought in for this in 2016, says Hamann.

In 2021, the Skyblues lost in the final against Chelsea (0-1), last year it was the semifinals against Real Madrid. Before that, the former Bayern coach never made it past the quarter-finals with the Citizens.

Norway bomber Erling Haaland as a problem in Manchester City’s system?

Didi Hamann sees a major problem in the squad with Erling Haaland (22), who came from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

With the signing of the Norwegian, who scored 32 goals and four assists in 31 competitive games and was able to continue seamlessly from his time at BVB (89 games, 86 goals, 23 assists), Pep Guardiola has abandoned his philosophy of possession, flow of the game and variability placed. “It goes against everything he’s done in the last 15 years,” said Hamann.

Despite the accuracy that puts Haaland well ahead of Harry Kane (17) in the Premier League’s top scorer list with 26 stalls, the 49-year-old can imagine that his teammates’ self-confidence will drop because the goals are distributed among fewer heads.

The Red Bull Arena will be packed with people on Wednesday. Unlike last season, when the ranks in the 2-1 home win in the group phase had to remain empty during the corona pandemic.
