Dave Bautista hasn’t been shy about his desire to play Bane, Batman’s enormous nemesisbut it seems that the Guardians of the Galaxy actor has put that dream to sleep.

In an interview with Insider, Bautista revealed that he spoke with the new co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, where he learned that a Gunn would like to start the next era of the DCEU “from the ground up” with “younger, fresher” actors..

He's been attached to the role for almost a decade.

“I’ve talked to James about it,” Bautista told Insider. “But I think the direction he’s taken, to completely reboot this universe, it takes you to start from scratch with a younger and fresher base, and I think that is necessary to do that“.

Although Gunn’s vision for the DCEU means that the role of Bane is not going to be for him, Bautista explained that he understood the reasons behind this decision. The actor told Insider that the rebirth of the DC Universe needs “a plan plan for the next 15 years”and it may not be an option for him given the physically demanding it could be to play Bane.

“I don’t want to play a character that I can’t do justice to,” added Bautista. “I don’t think at this point in my career I can do Bane justice.. I just don’t know if I could handle the physical part well, and I don’t think I have the longevity to plan ahead for the movies. So I don’t know if I would be that guy.”

In 2021, Bautista shared his hopes of playing the iconic Batman villain at Justice Con. During the Snyder era at DC, Bautista explained that he once made an appointment with DC to show his desire to play Bane.

The decision may be a bummer for those hoping to see the actor make the leap from hunky Guardians hero Drax to gargantuan Batman villain Bane, but there are always other roles with Gunn on the horizon. As a former head of Marvel, Gunn opened up on Twitter to say that he’s not afraid to turn to Marvel stars for DC movies.
