Netflix reveals and shows the first images of the new Onimusha anime, directed by the legendary Takashi Miike

Netflix has announced and revealed five images of a new Onimusha anime based on the successful Capcom game saga.

revealed in a tweeted by Netflix Anime, the images feature a handful of characters against the backdrop of Japan’s Edo period. The anime is being created with 3D characters, CGI and hand drawn backgroundsand the series promises to breathe new life into the classic game saga.

No release date has been announced, but Netflix has revealed the team behind the Onimusha anime. The project is directed by Takashi Miike and Shinya Sugai of Sublimation (the studio that released the Dragon’s Dogma anime in 2020) and stars Toshihiro Mifune as Musashi Miyamoto.

It has also been published a brief plot synopsis (courtesy of Gematsu), in which Netflix says “In the early Edo period, Musashi is no longer a young man. He sets out with the legendary Oni Gauntlet to defeat the Genma.”

The Onimusha saga began in 2001, but has been more or less dormant (outside of a mobile game, a browser game, and a remaster) since 2006, when Dawn of Dreams was released on PlayStation 2.

Capcom hasn’t said much about whether the series will return in full, but has commented that this would be “the first animated adaptation of its Onimusha series of games” and that it is “firmly committed to improving the brand value of its content” to through different forms of media.
