Entertainment Weekly has had the opportunity to interview James Gunn, director and writer of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, an interview that leaves us with some very interesting statements about the next Guardians movie. James Gunn began the interview talking about the third part of a trilogyreferring to them as something that can become mediocre. He didn’t want this to happen with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, so he worked extra hard to come up with a third party at the height of their superheroes.
“The number of good third episodes in a trilogy, I can count on the fingers of one hand,” he says. “Basically, there’s the Before Dawn series, Lord of the Rings, Spider-Man maybe… But there are not many good third parties“.
The director has sought at all times to give a vital importance to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and it has done so through the stories of its protagonists: “This is where things really happen. This is where we learn the truth about who these characters are, and we face the biggest stakes.”
Rocket will be one of the great protagonists
James Gunn admits that felt a kind of debt to Rocket or, as he calls it, “the secret protagonist of the Guardians movies.” The director and writer focused on giving it more prominence to the character, so much so that he will be forced to tell his origin storythe one that still haunts him.
“I felt like I needed to tell Rocket’s story,” Gunn explains. “It would have been very sad not to complete the trilogy for many reasons, but I feel very connected to Rocket. I feel like no one would be able to tell the full story of him if it wasn’t for me.”
Finally, we must not forget that this It’s the last James Gunn movie. in the MCU, since he is now working as one of DC’s ringleaders. Without a doubt, this movie is more special to him than we can imagine.
“I felt called to do it, if that makes any sense. So it feels great [sobre Vol. 3 ] because I feel that I did everything I could to make this trilogy the best it could be.. And I feel incredibly blessed and lucky to have all these people around me doing it. It’s the greatest blessing of my life.”
