James Gunn began the interview talking about the third part of a trilogyreferring to them as something that can become mediocre. He didn’t want this to happen with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, so he worked extra hard to come up with a third party at the height of their superheroes.

“The number of good third episodes in a trilogy, I can count on the fingers of one hand,” he says. “Basically, there’s the Before Dawn series, Lord of the Rings, Spider-Man maybe… But there are not many good third parties“.

The director has sought at all times to give a vital importance to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and it has done so through the stories of its protagonists: “This is where things really happen. This is where we learn the truth about who these characters are, and we face the biggest stakes.”
