The new Marvel villain has to fill titan shoes.

Marvel’s upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will present Jonathan Majors’ portrayal of Kang the Conqueror in a bold and robust way. Majors’ villain had a brief introduction in the Loki series as He Who Remainswhom Sylvie chose to kill despite knowing that his death would unleash countless powerful Kang variants bent on conquering the multiverse.

Now, Kang takes center stage in the Multiverse Saga. In a new interview with SFX Magazine (GamesRadar), screenwriter Jeff Loveness explained how Marvel is looking to create a villain as big as Thanos.

“For me, it’s about humanity”said Loveness. “Obviously, Thanos is a great iconic villain, but he’s also a great purple CGI guy. He’s an alien from outer space. What I really wanted to lean on is that kang is human“.

It’s quite likely that Kang’s role will be expanded beyond Ant-Man 3, as he the next Avengers movie literally has his name written on it. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which will hit theaters in 2025is also written by Loveness.

“Kang is also a very lonely character,” Loveness continued. “We’re going to see a lot of him in many different ways in the future, but I really wanted to introduce the humanity and even the vulnerability of this character before he reaches such apocalyptic heights, on an Avengers scale.“.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will kick off Marvel’s Phase 5, which will see how the UCM continues to grow both in film and on television before the next meeting of the Avengers. The new movie has already been heralded as a major challenge to the rest of the franchise, so perfecting the villain is essential. Nevertheless, Loveness seems sure that Majors’ Kang is something special..

“Kang is a top-notch Avengers villain,” says Loveness. “What do you do when you feel like you’re not enough against it? How do you deal with the challenge of this generation, which is Thanos at an exponential level? It’s almost an infinite Thanos. I think we’re setting things up for quite a dynamic story“.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will hit theaters on February 27, 2023.
