According to new information, Sony has halved its planned shipments of PlayStation VR 2 units at launch due to lackluster pre-order numbers.

The information comes courtesy of a new Bloomberg report citing several unnamed sources familiar with the situation. According to the sources, Sony now expects to ship just one million units during the current financial quarter.which runs from September 2022 to March 2023, and covers the release date of PSVR 2, February 22.

Apparently, Sony had tried to ship two million units during that same period in the hope that titles like Horizon: Call of the Mountain would garner enthusiasm and therefore pre-orders for the system.

PlayStation has promised that PSVR 2 will represent “the next generation of virtual reality gaming” thanks to a number of technological improvements over the original, such as the VR2’s 4K HDR OLED display, improved eye-tracking capabilities, and the addition of improved VR2 Sense controllers.

Nevertheless, a combination of factorssuch as PSVR 2’s lack of backwards compatibility and its exorbitant price, seems to have dampened consumer enthusiasm for the system.

Apparently, the company has communicated to its partners that expect a reduction in orders for hardware itemssuch as display panels, and which will now aim to ship approximately 1.5 million units between April 2023 and March 2024.

Earlier this month, PlayStation confirmed that PSVR 2 will feature a launch catalog of more than 30 games, including Gran Turismo 7, Tetris Effect: Connected, and Resident Evil Village. Follow IGN to stay up-to-date on all the PSVR 2 news ahead of the system’s launch on February 22.
