Craig Mazin, creator of the The Last of Us series along with Neil Druckmann, has explained in the official podcast of the series all the reasons that led them to choose the song Never Let Me Down Again by Depeche Mode for announce the start of a new adventure starring Joel, Ellie and Tess and close the first episode of the series.
“There’s a great tradition of ’80s music in The Last of Us and The Last of Us: Part II, and ’80 means trouble’. I love that phrase, because one of the things that Neil has done very well at Naughty Dog is hurt yourself with the things you love and take things that are bright, beautiful, joyful and optimistic to give them a dark background“, points out Mazin (via GamesRadar).
In addition to that dark touch that they were looking for, Mazin has also explained that they chose that song thinking about the true relationship between Joel and Ellie:
“A lot of ’80s music is upbeat and fun, but with this one we were looking for a song that, while up-tempo, is deep down save a dark letter. Never Let Me Down Again is about taking a walk with your best friend, but it’s a song about drugs and addiction. Ellie is about to go for a walk with her best friend and Joel is a dangerous man.. And Joel is about to go for a walk with his best friend (even though he doesn’t know she’s his best friend yet), but Ellie is also a dangerous kid. Now the point is, will you never be disappointed? They will do it. They’ll let each other down, and then they won’t, and then they’ll do it again, and then they won’t again. This idea was very interesting.”
