More Lord of the Rings movies are in the worksas announced today during Warner Bros. Discovery’s earnings conference call.
The news comes as Warner Bros. and New Line reach a multi-year deal with Swedish company Embracer Group AB that allows the studios to make further adaptations of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. At the meeting, CEO David Zaslav said that deal includes “multiple” films based on JRR Tolkien’s saga.
It has not been specified what the new films will be or what they will be about.
The first series of films was directed by Peter Jackson and was a huge success for Warner Bros. and New Line. The trilogy, released between 2001 and 2003, not only grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide, but also broke records at the academy awardsgetting 17 Oscars in all, including best picture for The Return of the King.
Zaslav had already hinted at the possibility of going ahead with The Lord of the Rings during an earnings call last year, telling investors the studio would “focus on franchises,” and even He mentioned the possibility of doing more Harry Potter movies, in addition to The Lord of the Rings.
No wonder Warner Bros. wants to keep investing in The Lord of the Rings, but rights have always been an issue for any studio trying to adapt Tolkien’s works. Amazon owns the television rights and premiered the first of five planned seasons of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. An anime film, The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim, will be released on April 12, 2024.
