FC St. Pauli extended their winning streak with a 2-1 win at 1. FC Magdeburg. The Kiezkicker remain undefeated under coach Fabian Hürzeler.

Hamburg/Magdeburg – It was a real tour de force! Through a 2:1 last minute win at the 1 FC Magdeburg has he FC St. Pauli took another step towards staying up in the league on Saturday and distanced a direct competitor.

In the noisy MDCC arena, however, the Kiezkicker made life difficult for themselves. The game started really well. “We did what we set out to do, especially in the first 20 minutes,” explained coach Fabian Hürzeler (29).

Through simple football, as he called it, the brown and whites had two good chances through Connor Metcalfe (13th minute) and Marcel Hartel (14th). Then, however, there was a break in the game of Hamburg.

“We then slacked off,” admitted captain Leart Paqarada (28). Simple mistakes brought FCM back into play, which in turn had the greatest opportunity to lead (17th) through Moritz-Boni Kwarteng (24).

From then on, Magdeburg had the upper hand and took the lead before the break thanks to the strong Baris Atik (28). “My pass into the middle, which then made it 0-1, was of course bitter,” admitted Paqarada. “I’m a player who plays with a lot of risk, I’m aware that there can be small mistakes here and there, but I’m at an age where that doesn’t bother me much in a game anymore.”

Despite the deficit, the Kiezkicker came out of the break with a good feeling and continued the strong early phase of the first half. Above all, substitute Maurides (28) was a real asset and had several opportunities to equalize.

However, it only fell a good quarter of an hour before the end. “Standards can do a lot and it’s nice that it went like this,” Paqarada explained the 1-1 after a corner he kicked and a header from Jackson Irvine (29). “Not every team can come back to this stadium and that shows the character of this team.”

And as we all know, that wasn’t all. Because then came Jakov Medic (24), who, like in Nuremberg (1:0), scored the winning goal. “We rewarded ourselves with the 2-1 win and showed morale,” said coach Fabian Hürzeler (29) with relief.

Template provider Marcel Hartel (27) had a special explanation for a pass to the later goalscorer. “I clashed with Herbert Bockhorn and then I had a laceration on my head. Maybe I played the pass because I was a bit confused,” he explained and laughed.

In general, and everyone involved on the St. Pauli side agreed, the win was deserved. Paqarada was perhaps the most apt when he said: “It’s going well for us at the moment.”

In the end, the Kiezkicker celebrated their fourth win in the fourth game under Hürzeler and climbed to eighth place in the table. The winning streak should be continued against Hansa Rostock next weekend.
