The players Jean-Luc Dompé (27) and William Mikelbrencis (18) have each been fined by their club after the serious car accident on Monday evening in the St. Pauli district, in which fortunately no one was injured.
The professionals, whose roles in the crash remain under investigation, have now spoken out themselves.
“We made a terrible mistake because we should have stayed where we were. We can only apologize formally and now have to take responsibility for the consequences,” said Mikelbrencis in the club’s statement on the cause.
Is HSV coach Walter going for Dompé against Heidenheim? “If he qualifies athletically”
Dompé also regrets his reaction. He added:
“I didn’t live up to my responsibility in this situation. I’m very sorry. I apologize to my team and also to HSV and its fans, who can certainly expect different behavior from a colleague and player in the first team.”
If the investigation shows that the accident was actually the result of an illegal car race, the two could face even more serious consequences.
Dompé initially stated that he had slipped on the rain-soaked road. He got into his teammate’s car and drove away because he was in shock.
