With so many upheavals in the industry—the mass layoffs at Netflix, the CEO change at Disney, and the messy Warner Bros. Discovery merger—it’s easy to assume that the subscription video-on-demand model is on its way to extinction. But while it is true that a number of large operators are rethinking their strategies and the way they present success to their investors, streaming has continued to break records in 2022. Nielsen reports that, for the first time in history, viewers opted for streaming options more often than broadcast on TVand he did it two months in a row, largely because this year has been positively packed with premieres on streaming platforms.
Although some of us are glad to have left series like The Final List, The Book of Boba Fett and Blockbuster, 2022 brought us many jewels. High fantasy returned in earnest with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The House of the Dragon and the highly anticipated adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman. For its part, weirdness reigned on all platforms with The Boys, The Peacemaker and Moon Knight, while gripping mysteries returned to the fore with Separation, Yellowjackets and The Afterparty.
Streaming platforms have more reasons than ever to keep their subscribers happy.
What does the future hold? Do all these shakeups mean we’ll be seeing fewer interesting series from the biggest players in the streaming space? The answer largely depends on the viewers.
In 2023 there will be little change on the consumer side, and future reorganizations will depend on the behavior of viewers (that is, us!). Everything from Disney’s firing of Chapek to Netflix’s mass layoffs are reactionary moves to investor panic, yes. But that panic is because in a world of endless competition (affectionately dubbed “the streaming wars”), companies have more reasons than ever to keep their subscribers happy.
What does that mean? especially that there is a lot to look forward to next year.
Fantastic horrors await us
fantasy and horror they may live on opposite sides of the genre spectrum, but if they have anything in common it’s that they were the two genres that were the best fit to sit together on this list.
The fantastic offer of 2023 is not going to be as good as the one of 2022. We will have to wait a little longer for all those dragons and orcs to return to our lives. But that does not mean that many things that we are dying to see will not come out. The third season of The Witcher It is just around the corner. Geralt, Jaskier, Yennefer and Ciri will return next year with a host of new monsters to face and trials to overcome. It will also be the last season Henry Cavill appears in before Geralt changes actors and is played by Liam Hemsworth. Who, yes, we should give a chance before making a fuss.
The unconventional, curious and still extremely exciting Good Omens sequel it will also arrive in 2023. While the first season was a perfect adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s incredible novel of the same name, the second will be all by Gaiman and will take us into uncharted territory for Crowley and Aziraphale as the series extends further. beyond the original material.
The terror train stops for no one, so be prepared to the fourth and final season of Servant, by M. Night Shyamalan. He hopes the threads connecting horror and pain will be more at the forefront of the series than ever when the master of horror brings his series to a close.
we will also see The Fall of the House of Usher, de Mike Flanagan, sometime in the fall of 2023, which, with his new Amazon deal, will likely be his last project with Netflix. Parting may be bittersweet, but there is no sorrow sweeter than Flanagan’s marriage and the tales of Edgar Allan Poe.
Of course, we all look forward to the premiere of The Last of Us. The adaptation is a dream come true for many, with a stellar creative team matched only by its top cast, and we can’t wait to dive into the ill-fated world of Joel and Ellie.
Don’t expect an immediate sequel to the flawless Interview with the Vampire in 2023 (it hasn’t been renewed yet), but Anne Rice’s The Mayfair Witches Will Return and they already occupy a very high place on our list of the most anticipated. If it’s anywhere near Interview with the Vampire quality, we’re in for a big surprise.
we will also receive the second season of Yellowjackets. The creepy, twisted and possibly cannibalistic sensation returns in March.
More Marvel of course
Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness returns in the highly anticipated Agatha: Coven of Chaos after her role in the flawless Scarlet Witch and Vision. The series delves into Harkness’s complicated history, his loyalties and rivalries with the other members of the Marvel coven.
Speaking of fan favorites, Loki, Sylvie and the rest of the TVA will return to our screens in 2023 with the second season of Loki. The studio hasn’t revealed any details about the second season, but no matter where the Variants’ journeys take us, we’re sure there’s plenty of hijinks to come.
Season 2 of Loki and Agatha: Coven of Chaos will be joined by several other exciting spin-offs, sequels, and continuations from the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Secret Invasion will bring our beloved Skrulls back into our lives, Riri Williams will continue the journey she began in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in her own series, Ironhearty Echo will return in its own series while his feud with the Kingpin only grows (yes, we will see Daredevil).
As if all this wasn’t enough, there are several Marvel animation projects very interesting running. But we’ll talk about them later.
In a galaxy far, far away…
How could we not be excited about the return of the mandalorian? After a brief side mission in The Book of Boba Fett, Mando, Grogu, and all the brood will return to our screens on March 1. We haven’t seen any new footage since D23, but it’s pretty clear that “what does it mean to be a Mandalorian” will continue to be the central question, as Bo-Katan will take the throne of Mandalore while Din Djarin grapples with the fact that he’s no longer called upon. considers himself a Mandalorian to the rest of his people.
Leslye Headland (co-creator of the critically acclaimed Russian Doll) takes us back to the last days of the High Republic with The Acolyte. The mystery thriller will follow a former Padawan and her Jedi master as they investigate a series of crimes, and despite the quick synopsis, she’ll be loaded with Sith knights.
And no list of “the most anticipated of 2023” would be complete without the inclusion of the expected Ahsoka. The story of Anakin Skywalker’s ill-fated former Padawan continues in live action, as he searches for the nefarious Grand Admiral Thrawn.
all about the bat
Ok, not everything revolves around Batman, but we can’t wait to see The Penguin when it hits HBO Max in 2023. The series, one of several planned spin-offs from Matt Reeves’ The Batman, will focus on, you guessed it, The Penguin! Regardless of where the series takes us, we can’t wait to spend more time in Reeves’ Gotham. And, with James Gunn having promised a more unified DCEU in the coming years, we’re very interested to see what this first foray into that combined universe can look like, given that Reeves’ movie was originally meant to be his own standalone story. . We’ll have to wait and see what the new study cohesion plan means for these spin-offs.
Superheroes will continue until morale improves. Of course, there’s never much moral to spare in The Boys universe, so we’re guessing the same will be the case with its college spin-off, Gen V. The gore level of The Boys meets the hormone level of Sky High and the challenges of The Hunger Games in the newest addition to Eric Kripke’s universe. The series will be directed by none other than Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters from the famous Agent Carter.
And yes, Gen V could be coming the same year as The Boys Season 4, but we don’t have any solid information on this yet.
Let’s not forget the true American hero either. The Peacekeeper and the rest of his old team will return in Season Two.. Like The Boys, we’re not 100% sure it’ll be in 2023, but we’re assuming we’ll see Chris Smith and his band make a triumphant return before the year is out.
New and exciting animation
We are always excited about animated releases. And considering how often this art was maligned in 2022, we’re thrilled with how exciting the 2023 offerings look across all genres and studios.
The Legend of Vox Machina will return in early 2023, bringing the hilarious and rowdy series back to our screens after its incredibly well-received first season. Those episodes blew us away, so there’s a lot of anticipation surrounding this return.
The second season of Star Wars: The bad consignment It’s coming to Disney+ in 2023, so fans can enjoy the franchise before The Mandolorian returns.
Our most anticipated animated title next year could be X-Men ’97. The continuation of the legendary X-Men animated series didn’t even seem possible a year ago, and now it’s just around the corner! We do not have a release date yet, but we will be attentive to know the details.
And then there’s the Scooby-Doo spin-off. Velma It will follow the masterminds of Mystery Inc. before those meddling kids even had a chance to form their group of ghost hunters. All the humans in the group will be represented, but don’t expect to see Scooby-Doo. Rights issues will prevent the pup we all spent our childhoods with from joining the series.
the absences
There are many amazing series waiting for us in 2023, but there are many that we will have to wait for as well. As I have already mentioned, both The House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will not arrive until 2024, but they are not the only important series whose return will be made to beg. The Sandman got Netflix renewed for a second season after garnering some good numbers, which were still offset by high production costs, but we currently don’t even know for sure when production on the sequel will begin, let alone when it will end. will premiere. Given the level of production the series requires, it’s almost certain that we won’t see anything until 2024.
You also have to take into account the next series of the MonsterVerso of Apple TV, whose working title is Hourglass. For now, all we know is that it centers on Godzilla and the rest of the Titans and that it will take place after the events of Godzilla vs. Kong. Although the series started shooting on June 30 of this year, it is a great series with great post-production needs. So while there’s a slim chance it’ll be released by the end of 2023, it’s probably safer to wait until 2024.
What is your most anticipated series for 2023?
