“It’s not easy to put into words what you were and will be for me. I admired you more than anyone else,” wrote the 28-year-old Munich professional on Instagram on Friday.

Lobinger died at the age of 50, as his family confirmed on Thursday evening.

The former track and field athlete had been battling cancer for years. Kimmich met the former indoor world champion of 2013 at RB Leipzig, where Lobinger worked as an athletic trainer. The duo continued their successful work in the Bavarian capital.
