DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have announced that The first DCU movie will be Superman: Legacywhich will be released on July 11, 2025.
Announcing their master plan for the new DCU at a press event on January 31, Gunn and Safran revealed that Superman: Legacy will begin Chapter 1 of the new DCUtitulado Gods and Monsters.
James Gunn is currently writing the script for the film.but he’s not yet confirmed to direct it, though Safran said at the event that the DC team is “waiting for him to do it.”
The movie Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrowbased on Tom King’s comics from last year, has also been announced. A press release released at the time of the announcement said it would feature a Supergirl “that viewers are not used to seeing.”
“Superman was sent to Earth, and was raised by incredibly loving parents, while Kara was on Krypton,” Gunn said at the announcement event. “She was a piece of Krypton who drifted off the planet and lived there for the first 14 years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone die around her. And because of that she’s a much tougher, more fucked-up Supergirl.” than we were used to until now.”
Gunn and Safran also revealed that there will be movies based on Swamp Thingwhich will explore the dark origins of the creature, and The Authority, which will incorporate characters from DC’s WildStorm label. In addition, they clarified his plan for the DCU’s Batmanwhich will include the father/son story The Brave and the Bold, as well as Matt Reeves’ previously planned The Batman trilogy.
Superman: Legacy Won’t Be An Origin Story
The couple also shared some details of the plot of Superman: Legacy, reiterating in the first place that it would not be an origin story. “It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing,” Safran said. “Superman represents truth, justice and the American way of life. He is goodness in a world that thinks goodness is out of date.”
Gunn added: “We want to put it away from the good guy versus the bad guy. And there are all kinds of very, very good people. Superman is among them.
“There are really terrible villains like Gorilla Grodd or Joker, and then there’s everyone in between. And so there are all these shades of gray of different types of characters, which allows us to tell more complex stories.”
Nothing else was said about the movie, though its status as the first project in the DCU means it’s likely will have to lay the new groundwork for future DC movies. He also shows that Gunn is keeping his promise that Superman is a top priority for DC Studios, if not the top.
We also know for sure that Henry Cavill is outdespite much back and forth in late 2022. The Man of Steel actor made his return as Superman in a brief cameo at the end of Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam and later announced his official return.
However, a few weeks later, when Gunn and Safran took over the reins at DC Studios, Cavill announced that he was not returning for the role. Instead, DC seems to be looking for “younger, fresher” actors.as Dave Bautista was also turned down for the role of Bane.
